THE LAST HOUR AND A half of work had passed quickly. Wes had reached a good stopping point and took a few minutes to jot down notes to himself so he could easily pick the work back up next week. He had made sure to announce his presence when he walked to the front of the store, so he didn’t startle Allison. She had given him a bright smile before flipping the front door sign to closed and locking up the store behind them.

“Gladys is going to come and check on the plants while I’m gone, that woman is a treasure,” she had said as Wes loaded her bag into his truck. “I’m still looking at some of those automatic water sprayers for when I might need to be gone longer than just a few days and Gladys might not be able to check on things on the weekends.”

“An automatic spraying system shouldn’t be too difficult to figure out,” Wes replied as they settled into his truck. He almost laughed at himself over how excited he was to have her riding along beside him in his favorite truck. Today he had opted to drive one of his personal trucks over his work trucks since he knew he was going up to the cabin, and if he were being totally honest, he had hoped that Allison would agree to drive out with him.

The roads weren’t crowded, which was surprising given that it was quitting time on a Friday, he kept his focus on the road no matter how tempted he was to sneak glances at Allison. The wind started to pick up as they traveled further out of town, and it pushed at the side of his truck.

Thank goodness I’ve got my girl safe with me, I would have been nervous if she had driven by herself. I mean, she’s not really “my girl” but she might as well be since she has had me mentally whipped for weeks now! She’s the first person I think about when I wake and she’s the last person I think about before I fall asleep. It’s pathetic. It’s also pathetic that I love how she smells like her flower shop. I’m tempted to take her hand in mine and hold it as I drive. I wonder what she would say? I feel like it’s only a matter of time before I take her in my arms and kiss her again. Cade would kick my ass if he knew how bad I have it for her. I’d have to let him too, because apparently, I’m no better than Grant fucking Beerly.

“Maybe I can talk to one of my engineers after we finish the backroom and see what he thinks about configuring a sprinkler system for the space. It would depend on your electrical outlets,” Wes said, trying to steer his thoughts to safer topics.

From the corner of his eyes, Wes saw Allison nodding. “Makes sense. I’d like that.”

The rest of the drive was relatively quiet. Wes turned on his go-to easy listening station for some background noise.
